Heartnut
Heartnut – Japanese Walnut
Long, hanging strings of 10-20 nuts per cluster. Hard, egg shaped shell cracks easily. Heart shaped kernel is unusually easy to extract; comes out whole or in halves. Rich, bitter free flavor similar to butternuts; the sweetest of the walnuts. High in protein. Long keeping. Large, spreading, highly productive, Japanese type walnut grows rapidly to 50-60 feet tall with a 30-40 ft. spread. Bears in 3-5 years. Abundant, luxurious, almost tropical foliage; long, compound, light green leaves turn yellow in the fall. Adapted to heavy or light soils. Zones 5-9.
