Asian Persimmon
Fuyu
Medium to large, round, flattened, glossy, orangeish red fruit. Light orange, firm, crunchy, rich, sweet, mild flesh is non astringent when firm ripe. Can be peeled and eaten fresh like an apple, dried or frozen. Keeps for several months in a cool room. Hardy, attractive tree. Practically pest free. Self-fruitful. Better for cool summer climates than Hachiya. Ripens mid-October through November. 200 chill hours. Zones 7-10.
Early Fuyu
Possible mutation of Fuyu. Non astringent Fuyu type that ripens earlier over a long season. Ripens from September until frost.
Giant Fuyu (Gosho)
Hybrid of Fyuy Jiro. Very large, round, flattened, reddish orange fruit. About 40% larger and not as flat as regular Fuyu. Sweet juicier, smooth textured, firm. Good for fresh eating, dried, frozen or cooked fresh in pastry, jams, and jellies. Self fruitful. Easy to grow in cool or hot climates. Fall harvest. Ripens in late October. 100-200 chill hours. Zones 8-9.
Izu
Medium size fruit with good taste. Non astringent flesh. Dwarf tree. Bears only female flowers. Good disease resistance. Good fruit set. Ripens in September. 100-200 chill hours. Hardy to 9 degrees F. Zones 6-10.
Jiro
Large sweet, orange red fruit that is eaten hard or soft. Upright tree grows 10-12 feet tall. Ripens mid to late October. Cold hardy. This is the persimmon that is commonly sold in U.S. grocery stores. Second most popular non astringent cultivar in Japan. Zones 6-10.
Saijo
Mr Elegeant. Small conical elongated, yellowish orange fruit. No Cracks. High seedlessness. Flesh is astringent and is not eaten fresh until soft ripe when it has a very sweet, wonderful flavor. Very good quality. Can be dried while firm. The drying processes removes the astringency. Dried fruit is very sweet with texture like dates. Stores well. Highly vigorous, medium size, upright, spreading tree. Heavy annual bearer. Consistent producer. Self pollinating. 200 chill hours. Zones 6-9. Old Japanese variety. Original tree is 600 years old. Known in Japan as “The Very Best One”
Hachiya
Large, acorn shaped flattened fruit. Has few seeds when planted apart from other persimmons. Orange flesh. Astringetn until fully ripe. Sweet, even when crisp and firm more so when fully ripe. Usually softened off the tree. Excellent quality. Used for drying when firm ripe. Medium to large, vigorous spreading, highly ornamental tree with red, bronze and yellow autumn color. Self-fruitful. Insect and disease free. Grows best in well drained, light soil. Leading U.S. commercial variety. Widely planted in California. Ripens in late fall. 100-200 chill hours. Zones 6-10.
Nikita’s Gift
Asian x American Cross. Size of the Asian persimmon,; hardiness of the American persimmon. Flattish, 2.5 inch red-orange fruit. Sweet flavor when fully ripened and soft. Fruit falls from the tree when ripe. Self fertile. Zones 6-9. From Nikita Botanic Garden in Yalta.
