Self-fruitful. Deep taproot; drought resistant. Used as a rootstock for black walnut cultivars, heartnuts and Persian walnuts. Gorgeous, dark brown wood; easily worked, highly valued for furniture. Adaptable but prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Zones 4-9. Native from Ontario to Massachusetts, to Florida and Texas.
