Vaccinium corymbosum northern highbush. Standard of excellence. The leading commercial northern highbush cultivar. Open, medium large clusters. Large to very large, firm, bright light blue berries; 65 per cup. Small scar. Crack resistant. Good subacid flavor. Good for fresh eating, preserves, baking and freezing. Vigorous upright 4-6 foot tall bush with slender light red canes. Foliage somewhat space; fiery red in autumn. Overbears unless properly pruned. Yields 12-20 pounds per bush. Suited for mechanical harvest. bears for over one month and maintains good size. Self pollinating. Moderately drought resistant. Ripens in Mid July. Withstands spring frosts. 600-1000 chill hours. Hardy to -25 degrees F. Zones 4-8. Introduced in 1952.
Patriot
Vaccinium corymbosum. Northern highbush. US3 x earliblue. Tight clusters of large, slightly flat, medium blue berries; 49 per cup early in harvest. 60 per cup later. Firm, if weather is not too hot. Small, dry, recessed scar. Above average flavor. Moderately upright, open, very vigorous, 4-6 foot tall bush with red wood. Red fall color. Yields 10-20 pounds per bush depending on site. Usually picked twice. First pick yields 80%. Shows red back if picked to early. Only variety resistant to Phytophthora cinnamomi, widely distributed soil fungus that causes root rot. Tolerates wet or clay soils well .Ripens early July. 1000+ chill hours. Hardy to -29 degrees F. Zones 3-8. Developed at the University of Maine.
Duke
VACCINIUM CORYMBOSUM. Norther highbush. Medium size, firm, light blue berries about 65 per cup. Good color and small dry scar. Mild flavor. Good quality. Vigorous, very productive, open, stocky, multicaned, upright 4-6 foot tall bush. Blooms late. Ripens early. Consistently high yields of 10-15 pounds per plant. Two harvests 7-10 days apart. Used for fresh market and processing. Self fertile. Ripens early. Mummy berry resistant. 1000+ chill hours. Zones 4-8. Developed by the New Jersey AES and the USDA. Selected in 1972 from crosses of Earliblue, Ivanhoe, Berkeley, Coville and Atlantic. Introduced in 1986.
Elliot
Vaccinium elliotii. Small to medium, firm light blue berries. 75 per cup. Small dry scar. Will not crack or drop. Good mild flavor when fully ripe. Very tart until 60% of the berries are ripe. Vigorous, upright, slightly spreading, 5-8 foot tall bush with red wood. Ornamental blueish green leaves. Late blooming flowers. Self fruitful. Consistently yields 10-20 pounds per bush. Suitable for mechanical harvesting; 70-80% of berries can be picked at one time. Not a good choice for one 5 coastal areas of the pacific northwest. Zones 4-8. Introduced in 1973.
Chandler
Vaccinium corymbosum. Northern highbush. Largest blueberry, quarter size, even larger than Darrow; 45 berries per cup. Light blue, firm fruit. Small dry stem scar. Excellent flavor. Very productive; up to 15 pounds per plant. Ripens late midseason over a 7 week period. Hand harvest recommended for fresh market; concentrated ripening lends itself well for mechanical harvest. Self fertile. 700-1000 chill hours. Zones 4-8. Can withstand temperatures to -18 Degrees F. Named for Jim Chandler a grower in Corvallis, Oregon.
